Take elements from Frankenstein, Forrest Gump and Benjamin Button. Wrap them up in a thin cloth of romanticism and you get The Age of Adaline.

Adaline (Blake Lively) has a freak accident sometime during the early 19th century that renders her, for lack of a better word, immortal. From then on, she stops aging and for over a hundred years looks no older than 29.

Unfortunately, when certain government officials become curious about her true age they take her into custody and try to accuse her of being a Communist spy. Luckily, they lacked any evidence and eventually let her go.

Not wanting to go through such an ordeal again, Adaline decides to move to another city as quickly as possible. Of course, this also means no longer being a part of her normally aging daughter’s life.

So, Adaline then makes a habit of moving from city to city. Eventually she gets tired of running and struggles to decide whether she’s ready to settle down or not.

I must admit, the only thing I really liked about this movie was the slight science fiction twist it had. The entire process of her freak accident is explained quite thoroughly. It led me to believe that there would be scenes in which Adaline becomes fully aware of why she stopped aging. But she never does.

The rest of the movie revolves around an all too typical love story. I nearly fell asleep during most of the sappy love scenes, only because they seemed to be a rehashing of so many other love stories.

However, Blake Lively does give a decent performance as Adaline. It’s too bad that the bulk of the story forced her to portray Adaline as just another damsel in distress.

Harrison Ford portrays William Jones, an ex boyfriend of Adaline’s. His performance was at least slightly better but I don’t think these kinds of movies suit him well.

If you’re interested in seeing a typical love story that completely ignores it’s science fiction origins then The Age of Adaline is right for you.

On a scale of 1 tamale to 10 tamales I give it 6.8 tamales.
